Animal Tracks

I JUST got the printed sample of this in the mail. It is the November/December issue of Scholastic News. They did a great printing job!

It was fun to paint a Canadian Lynx. Despite the variety of cats I painted for Big Cats, this species was not one of them.

Below is what the printed issue looks like.

Fairy Summit

This is a little doodle I did yesterday for fun. I had not done ink drawings in a while and thought this would be fun. (Yes, I SHOULD have been working on something else).

I wanted to experiment with flat color rather than a fully rendered piece. I like the simplicity and this may be a good style for a graphic novel type project. Color in Photoshop (of course).

Old Victorian fairy paintings were the inspiration for the design of this illustration. I love how they played with bizarre scales in some of them-big person, little person, giant bugs...

BibliOdyssey

Need reference art, perhaps, on echinodermata? Knights? The art of Mikhail Maiofis (pictured)? Check out BibliOdyssey. Strange and beautiful. Be sure to explore the links at the bottom of the page. There's so much to see...

Animal Rescue Art Project

Here is the image I did for the Animal Rescue Art Project.

The show is February 14th at Loveland Art Studios.

There were so many orange cats at the factory that I painted 3 of them on 4" X 4" squares and mounted them on board. I have a soft spot for orange tigers.

Angel Investing

Completed this one a month or so ago for Inside Business Magazine. Usually go through several alterations in the sketch phase before starting on the final.

mm poster cont.

...and finished! It's a little warped and grainy - forgot to reset my iso - but the color's not bad.

Tea with Friends and a Turtle

Here is an image that started out as a quick doodle and I finished it in Photoshop. It was an excuse to play with the Cintiq and it got a little out of hand.

The turtle is very loosely based on a Galapagos turtle. I was also inspired by tribal decoration in Africa using plants and flowers.

I need to do more experimentation with Painter now that my system is a LOT faster. It was clunky on my old computer.

Is an Illustration Business Stable Dying???

Another reason why old illustration methods are dying off like old newspapers.  Lack of necessity?  OUCH!!!!!

The good news, we're in a new era of creativity!

Any of your clients on this web site?

Stickers?

I'm working up sticker designs for a new business venture. (Not this design!)
Can anyone recommend a good printer?
Also, as I'm looking for stickers tough enough for bumpers & windows, what do I need to look for to assure that they'll be weather- and sun-proof?

Announcement

Valuing Illustration

If Rockwell produced the same quality and amount of work, but did not have the series of covers for the Saturday Evening Post.... would he be as acclaimed?

Winter Wolf-er-land

"Giovanni the Wolf" is the mascot I created for the St. Francis of Assisi school in California. Who knew wolves were so dexterous?

Painting with oils again

Howdy Folks,
Just thot that I would post my latest dalliance with oil paint. It has ben years since I painted on canvas with just oils and wanted to see if I still had some chops plus I missed the smell. So I have been creating some small still lifes and doing some larger works as well. Here is the first still life I did. I was always amazed at the animal crackers box - how elaborate the pictures of the animals were on the box and yet how unidentifiable the actual cookies were....Dave

C.F. Payne's Time Cover

Fellow Cincinnati illustrator C.F. Payne did a portrait of Obama for the January 26th cover of Time Magazine.

My fish painting goes to a Chiropractor...

Hello everyone, ok, so i'm actually going to post some of my work. this is a painting I did just for fun, it's big and took a while but I do love it. Fish are a bit of a passion for me and I long for the sun in colder months so you can see where it comes from. My good friend Dr. Nicole White swung by and oogled all over it, so i decided to send it off to her newly opened chiropractic office tomorrow... it's better there than in my guest bedroom.

Life's Lesson

With colleges graduating 50,000+ art majors a year, how many of those grads have a job in the arts five years later?  Imagine what the government would do if these graduates were lawyers.

Prove how art can inspire business!
