Black line shortcut

Howdy Folks,
I was in a hurry to get this image done so I just turned my original pencil sketch into a black line and then created all the color digitally in layers underneath the black line. I thought it was a pretty good shortcut - especially if you are in a hurry. This is a postcard ( and t-shirt) created for the Grumpy Gourmet and is about the 1926 OSU's Homecoming Queen election of a cow. The first image is the sketch I sent off and the second image is the final piece. I just got rid of everything except the cow and then got rid of all the white and used the scanned pencil as a black line that sits above all the color layers in Photoshop.

  1. Nice work David! Your technique on this project is similar to the one I frequently use in Photoshop.

  3. John,
No, I am not going to animate it - this figure would be a nightmare to animate unless it was turned into a 3D model and texture mapped. It just has too much texture to render if done two dimensionally.
This is one of those quick freelance jobs I did for a friend, Doral Chenoweth. He is the Grumpy Gourmet, the food critic for the Columbus Dispatch for years, here is his website:

    Christina,
Yeah you are right - it is rather bizarre. I actually do alot of bizarre work - it just seems like old hat to me anymore......Dave
