Comments

Once again, blogger is being super touchy and is not taking comments (at least for me). Hopefully they will fix the issue soon...

Paula: I tried many, many times to leave a comment (and even restarted). I am not sure what is going on... It let you leave a comment. I will try firefox and see if I get better results. Usually these things eventually work out...

Aw Shucks!

Greeting from Greenville, SC! I've got the painting bug again ;~)

Here's where my still life with corn is right now...... I'd like to put another 4 or so hours into it tonight & be done with it! Any advice for a rusty oil painter? Anything weird sticking out? I know I need to work on that squat little Coke can; something's not right about it.

My steps in reverse.....

Hope everyone's doing well!

Road Trip: Norman Rockwell Exhibit and Louisville Slugger Museum

Cannot wait until November to see some original art by Norman Rockwell at the Dayton Art Institute?

I just read in the Cincinnati Enquirer that the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory has and exhibition called Norman Rockwell: Sports until August 4th.

From the site: "Open now through August 14, this special show features original sports-themed artwork by Norman Rockwell, the beloved illustrator best known for his iconic Saturday Evening Post covers. Admission to the exhibit is included with purchase of a ticket to Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory."

Well worth the trip!

If anyone knows of other cool opportunities like this, feel free to share them!

The Artist's Life

‎"if you can make it through the first forty years of being an artist, it's the greatest life there is"

Illustrator News: Myra Messick Simons

A while ago, I mentioned in the Illustrators Lunch Announcement that Glacier Park in Montana was looking for an Artist In Residence applications.

Myra Messick Simons decided to apply and got the position!

She says: I was accepted for this summer.  I 'm excited because I love being in the wilderness, and it will be a memorable experience for my 12 year old son. It will be an awesome opportunity to gather outdoor reference and paint on a larger scale, which I have been doing for a while. I'll let everyone know how it went when I get back later in July. There will be no internet service at the cabin where my son and I are staying, and I will not be able to use the government computers. Unfortunately, I do not own a laptop. I spent my money on art supplies and camera equipment, not to mention the cost of road travel there and back! Attached are a few paintings I have done recently.

Congratulations Myra! It makes me happy that people actually read the emails I send out each week!

Opening of "Drawing the Line: the art of comics, illustration, animation"

In a fit of blogger bugginess, this post evaporated. Must be a Google/Friday the 13th thing.

Here are the pictures again of the show opening at Clermont College. Tim Fuller, Daryll Collins, Brennan Bradford, David Hartz and I (Christina Wald) were all there to check it out.

The woman who put the show together, Kim Taylor, worked on the show The Simpsons for 5 years! How cool is that? Being part of the Simpsons creative team would be my dream job! (Futurama even better!)

She was instrumental in getting several other artists in the show from the Simpsons who put together their own comics anthology:

For those interested, he is keeping a blog while he is there about his experience. Lots of great art and museum photos, like the above of the Gates of Hell by Rodin.

Kiwanis Cares Safety Fair Poster

I thought I'd share this. My father works with Kiwanis and asked me to create this poster for their new event.

As you can probably guess, this was a really fun project to work on. Each character was designed separately, then added in. I may try to do a full composition in one sitting, but I find piece-mealing it so much easier to re-arrange as needed.

If any of you have kids (or nieces, nephews, etc.), it will be a really fun time. The theme this year is bicycles, helmet, and fire safety. The fair will take place at the Hamilton County Educational Service Center (HCESC) in Forest Park. The address is 924 Waycross Road 45240.

Petar Meseldzija

I imagine there's already been a post about artist Petar Meseldzija...his popularity has recently exploded after this year's Illuxcon. But I received today my Amazon order of his book The Legend of Steel Bashaw and it is beautiful.

If you love fairy tales and narrative fantasy illustration, please give this book a glance. Most of the work can be seen on Petar's site but the book in print is really crisp. It's not an extravagant, 200 page book or anything. It's a glue-bound softcover piece and it's relatively short. I haven't read it yet, but it's beautiful and moving even at just a glance. It's a great visual lesson in color, light, narrative, texture, composition and dramatic staging. The sketches and development work at the back are a great treat as well. Check it out!

Justin, I think you'd love every bit of it from his paintings, to the painted framing of each piece.

Viki Woodworth's Butterfly Mask

These are kids and adults at the Cincinnati Zoo coloring in paper masks of a butterfly that Viki Woodworth designed. The mask was a big hit with kids and adults at my craft tables for Children's Day at the zoo, April 30th. The design is so attractive that even grown up ladies asked to have the mask to color.
