Rarr! Monsters and stuff

If you're in Columbus this weekend, swing by Origins Game Fair and stop by the Mage Wars booth.
I did a couple of cards for them. So these will appear about an inch and a half tall.

Also, if you're curious as to how I've been paying the bills lately you can visit Myth of Midigan. It's nothing like my normal style and is just for this particular commission. I've done about 26 sequential pages for it that they'll be uploading one of every couple of days.

Also, if anybody is interested, I'm looking for a booth assistant for GenCon in Indianapolis. I can offer housing and a badge and of course a ride there if needed.

Also, if any of you fantasy or comic artists are interested, I'm in charge of getting together a small group of artists for a convention in Lexington in May of 2012. E-mail me if interested.

steam engine/pump Animation

Finally getting around to posting these two animations, although Flickr limits video uploads to 500M so they're in 10-sec or so increments...sorry about the fragmented presentation. These were done for a conference center/museum in Boston to show how these monsters worked; they haven't moved in many decades. The videos play continuously (with captions) on screens around the engines at 1280x1024 dpi - huge files that made working with a rendering farm in Texas necessary. These were fun and I learned a lot in the process. The second video is not completely uploaded yet, but should be by tomorrow - been dodging thunderstorms by shutting down the computer on and off for two days.

Writing Seminar

A lot of illustrators are interested in writing their own children's books and I am often asked about local critique groups. Also, if you write or want to write graphic novels, this may be helpful from a purely story structure standpoint.

Dave Richardson (who you may know from Blue Marble) is doing a 3 hour writing workshop for the Kenton County Library system this Sat. (June 18).

It's for beginners/intermediate. He is covering some basics ( like formatting), but also story arc, voice, character, and a few others. There will be a couple of writing exercises and time to share, and an hour for submitted ms critiques with the group.

It runs from 10-1 just down the street from the Kenton County Public Library on Scott Street in Covington (they are remodeling the top floor of the library at this time).

It's also a good place to meet the writers in the KCPL Writing for Children critique group.
They can contact Patti Richards at patricia.Richards@kentonlibrary.org or call the KCPL and ask for her.

Beth Akers: First post and recent work

Hi everyone! I've recently been added to this blog, and this will be my first work share post. I just graduated from the University of Cincinnati last weekend (majoring in Fine Art), and now I'm very excited to share my work with all of you. Any comments or constructive criticism is of course welcome.

Also, time for a shameless plug: I've been illustrating for an online graphic novel/literary journal called The Catalina Project. Please check it out if you have the time!

That's all for now! I should be able to start coming to the illustrator's lunches soon, so hopefully I'll see some of you there.

Little Drummer Baby

Oops - it's been a while since I've posted here! Here's a remedy for that.

This image became a cartoon at my "Pen Grenades" website, but before that it was a simple sketch that I always wanted to share with more people.

Aw shucks!--final

Hello, again, Cincy! I'm calling the still life with corn FINISHED! (Sure, I could spend more time on it, but I'm happy with where it is. ....and the actual subject has shriveled beyond use!)

I like looking at my palettes when a painting is complete! Sad to scrape them off.....

I'm looking forward to surprising my (wonderful) allergist-doctor with this for his new office! (I told the secretary, and she's all about it. We're planning to hang it while he's with a patient for maximum-surprise-factor.)
