Looks good do far although the red is a bit bright compared to the belly/wing colors. I feel like they should be pumped up or the red toned down. I would like to see the smoke a bit wispier.I would also make the expression on the dragon's face pop a little more, the color is overwhelming it a little.
Not bad for not using this program in six years, man :P Had some intense college flashbacks of the computer lab, though :P
Thanks, Christina. I'll drop that red down. I actually meant to make the inside of his mouth white, instead of yellow.
Wow, that did wonders, Christina. Thanks. That really threw the shadowed wing back and brought everything together nicely.
Really nice, Justin! I think doing characters in vectors is a real tricky thing. In my experience, the clean lines usually kill whatever is appealing about a sketch. Was this auto-traced? Whatever technique you used, I think you've pulled him off beautifully.I agree with Christina's comments. I like the smoke in your sketch a lot. In the final, it's too bold and distracts from his face. If there isn't time to gray it down, I'd consider ditching it altogether. Thanks for sharing —it's awesome!
Chuck,Thanks, man. I appreciate it. Actually, I used the 'brush' tool. What a wonderful Illustratour convention! Not exactly like inking with a brush, but close. I will make the stroke lines around the smoke a smaller point size. Maybe add some more 'wisps'.
Nice job, especially since you haven't used Illustrator in a while. I used to use it almost exclusively, until I could no longer use Streamline. The line conversion program in Creative Suite is not quite the same.
Thanks, Daryll. That means a lot. I respect your work a great deal. You have such clean and expressive lines. I do my best to achieve that level of skill. For something like this, I'd rather just use the brush tool and make my lines that way than ink it and then 'live trace'. For me, I think this method preserves line quality and freshness easier. Can't wait to see some new stuff from you, man. I haven't seen you in a long time. I hope you post some things, soon :)
I think this would make a great shirt with some geeky phrase to go along with it :P I should get some printed and sell them at conventions.I plan on doing more vectour and design projects and digital painting. You'll definitely be seeing more from me in that vein.
