Recent junk

After seeing the terrific art being produced by Justin, I feel a little sheepish about posting this stuff. I thought I'd wait until these recent ones were finished and put them all up at once. Here they are.

  1. Nice work, Jerry! 'New York City?!' :P I really like the cowboy sign :P The SIMS lettering reminds me of the MAD Magazine logo. These are all really nice. When did you do all of these? Your work's pretty awesome, man. This new work is really great.

  2. Jerry, I have to say, your work always makes me feel really inspired. There is something tangible about it. Probably because it's hand drawn and largely finished by hand. Your designs are solid and even though they're crammed with stuff, they always seem to breathe well and provide a great sense of origin that many modern artists don't possess. There's something about most of the digital stuff these days that smacks of homogeneity, and not in a unified but different way. Your work's refreshing, Jerry. Thanks for bringing it to the groups and sharing it here. It's definitely inspiring. Hope we get to see more of those paintings you've been hiding away :P

  3. Thanks for your comments Justin. Coming from you means a lot. You and I are at different ends of the illustrators world. My days as an illustrator have pretty much ended. I guess cartooning will keep me busy.
The cowboy is actually a neon sign in Las Vegas. It was difficult to make it work. Maybe I should have used a thin stock and let a 100 watt light bulb shine through it. Has that ever been done before? The client for that piece is in San Antonio, but the subject loves gambling, hence Las Vegas. These are all done with colored inks.
The Gartner one has name tags on the people which I didn't want, but the client calls the shots.
Speaking of the designs, the really involved ones are roughed out in photoshop layers so I can rearrange and change sizes before I do finished art. Sure beats the old way of a dozen sheets of tracing paper.
You and I have this in common — our work is crammed with stuff.

  4. I should have mentioned that the Nature Sweet Tomato drawing is too heavy on the top left side, because of that cowboy sign. I tried to balance it with some black elements on the right, but nothing worked there, Maybe I could have moved the car there or flipped the man and the girl.

  5. I think it works well, man. I think if that guy's head wasn't under the sign it would be a different story. Nice work though :)

And what the hell are you talking about? We are on the SAME journey, Jerry. You won't be done till you're done. The world doesn't decide that, no matter how many clients you do or don't have :) We're in this together. I value your experience very much. I'm a lucky guy to have folks like you and the rest of the lot at the group to draw on for thoughts and critiques about any number of things, most of all art.

And, yeah, I really crammed this one full of stuff. I'll have to open it up a bit more. I think dropping the characters back definitely allowed for some illusoury breathing room :)

  7. These are absolutely amazing. I cannot believe how much people want crammed into a gift caricature.

  8. Jerry, these are maniacal - I can't believe how much violence is going on in the Brewer Cote one. Also, if I were the Purple TeleTubbie guy, I would have to wreak vengeance on you. Great work!
