This is an illustration running in the Oct. 10, 2014 issue of the Cincinnati Business Courier. The idea they wanted was to see the major buildings downtown cinched in by a belt ... which was a difficult thing to design, as the iconic buildings are spread out over a width equivalent to Covington and Newport. I tried keeping the style kinda loosey goosey, taking some inspiration from the background design of The Powerpuff Girls.

Fascinating Article About Artists and Tax Revenue

The New York Times published an interesting article about how the Internal Revenue Service views artists and write offs and is called:

It starts:

"If you say you are an artist, but you make little money from selling your art, can your work be considered a profession in the eyes of the Internal Revenue Service?"

Although we are not in the fine art world for the most part, many of us dabble and do gallery shows, etc.

I do not know any freelancer with a business plan, but they still make a living and that can vary wildly from year to year. You can kind of plan but there are a LOT of variables.

The upshot of the ruling is that you can make very little money and still be considered a professional artist.

New Space Art

A couple of illustrations being published soon.

The first is the opening interior art for "The Art of Space: The History of Space Art, from the Earliest Visions to the Graphics of the Modern Era" being released on October 14th.

The second piece is an interior illustration for "All About Space" from Imagine Publishing in the U.K. It shows several options for remotely exploring Saturn's moon, Titan.

Both pieces are digital having been created in 3DS Max, PhotoShop and After Effects.

It's that time of year again....Halloween!!...... So I always like to share the one thing that keeps us so busy at this time of year.....our Halloween Make-up and body painting. We get really busy and every year is full of surprises as our clients come back year after year with all these great ideas. I'll be sure to post some pictures from this year....in the meantime here are some from previous years....enjoy!

Sketching at Union Terminal

Today a a couple of us local sketchers left deadlines and day-jobs behind for a couple of hours to go sketch the Museum Center at Union Terminal.  In spite of some tumultuous skies and a few rain drops, we got some drawing done in front of this iconic Cincinnati landmark.

Here's Amy Bogard working with not only her usual watercolors, but some pencils as well.

And below is Christina Wald nestled into the bushes to stay out of the wind while she sketched.

Here it is, the final Reditorial Cartoon of 2014. Plans for new cartoons are taking shape, and I'll post it here once everything is finalized.

Carol Tyler Lecture

Wednesday, October 1, 2014, 7:00-8:00 pm, the Carnegie offers a rare opportunity to hear Cincinnati’s CAROL TYLER, noted cartoonist, give a free public presentation based on her graphic novel, You’ll Never Know.   Her talk will be of special interest to those in art, graphics,  writing,  comics,  and have relevancy for veterans,  families of veterans  and  health professionals concerned with PTSD.

Classes: Jim Effler Teaching at Women's Art Club

 Jim Effler will teach his approach to painting using photos manipulated in Photoshop to follow classical principles such as establishing shadow and light, match colors, block in areas of color, and more. Part of the time you will be using Photoshop, but the majority of the time will be painting, and the end product will be a painting.

Students will need oil painting supplies and a canvas, specifics to come later.A laptop with Photoshop is recommended, but arrangements can be made if you do not have them. A digital camera is optional; printer and paper will be provided.

Animation Movie Night: Boxtrolls

If anyone is interested, we are meeting at the Cinemark in Oakley to see Laika's new animated film The Boxtrolls on Tuesday, September 30th at 7:05.
