Opening Day Show at Neon's

Too much Mad Magazine as a kid causes strange thoughts...

I did a couple paintings for a Opening Day show at Neon's put together by Ghost Empire Collective. It looks like there will be a lot of cool work. Fortunately, the art could focus on mascots so no one would notice my lack of ability drawing actual sporting events.

The show will feature live art and artwork by illustrator/poster designer Jaimie Filer, photographer/visual artist Snotty RLE, videographer/visual artist Justin K. Hite, painter Doug Meyer, designer Justin Barraclough, artist Brian Lalley, artist Sarah Timmerman, visual artist/Ghost Empire founder Anthony “Tank” Mansfield, Mike Maydak and many more.

Hope to see you there!

Mr. Redlegs has always seemed like a bit of a player. I love this car design based on a real car with a real fin like that.

Poster Design for Emergency Preparedness Workshop

Howdy Fellow Illustrators,
I recently designed this poster/flyer for my Tai Chi teacher, Tim Coletta . This is really a disguised advertisement for the actual workshop. The workshop teaches you how to prepare ahead of time for any kind of emergency and will be well worth anyone's time to attend. So if you think this might be an interesting topic - by all means sign up for the workshop this weekend.

I hope you all will excuse this flagrant promotion of a workshop not related to illustration. The attached poster/ illustration was created pro bono and I thought it was effective. So if you are offended by events that are non-illustrative then please respond with comments about the merits of the poster design.

Year of the Pig

My friend's daughters are into their Chinese zodiacs. So, he wanted me to do a painting of them for their birthdays this year. This is the Year of the Pig one. The other will be Year of the Monkey. This was a super fun idea. I finally bought good water color paper and wow, what a difference that made. I'm super excited to start painting more soon.

Seems like forever since I checked in here...lots of catching up to do!  Here's the art for this year's Mini-Marathon poster; the race takes place this weekend. I'll be at one of the first aid EMS stations on the route - wave as you go by!

Cincinnati Magazine Continued-Carol Tyler

I know there was discussion about Cincinnati Magazine using Cincinnati illustrators. The good news is that Carol Tyler is doing a monthly comic for them called Tomatoes.

Here is a blurb about it: http://www.cincinnatimagazine.com/editorsletter/story.aspx?ID=1841540

No images to link to, but check it out!

Interesting Your Dreams My Nightmares Podcast

This week's interview with illustrator Tim O'Brien was one of the better ones I have listened to:

http://yourdreamsmynightmares.com/post/44400008599/your-dreams-my-nightmares-episode-046-an

It is an interesting contrast to this interview with recently graduated students:

http://yourdreamsmynightmares.com/post/43776177957/your-dreams-my-nightmares-episode-045-an

Both are worth a listen. Tim talks about the business of being an illustrator than most usually go into in an interview.

This is also a good time to mention that the next Icon illustration convention (Icon 8) is July 2014 in Portland, Oregon. I am interested in attending. Is anyone else thinking about it?

Alexi Natchev: Printmaking Demo

This looks like a really interesting demo at the Hebrew Union College in Clifton by illustrator Alexi Natchev on March 31st.

Opening at Miller Gallery

Jerry, John and David in front of David's work
Several of us went to the Miller Gallery opening on February 22nd, but only Jerry sensibly took pictures.

David Michael Beck has some AMAZING work on display along several other stellar artists.

Lunch is at Teller's this week, so I recommend stopping at the gallery before or after to check it out.
