Yet-to-be released pieces

The artwork's been approved by my clients, but the pieces haven't been released into the wilds just yet. Still, I don't think they're any harm showing them here amongst friends and colleagues.

First is a poster for a play called The Riverside, which will be at the Clifton Performance Theater in September. I'll be doing five other posters through their 2014-2015 season, and I'm planning on having them all stay in a consistent style.

This is an illustration in a Xavier basketball-themed magazine that will be published by Cincinnati Magazine.

2014 Books By the Banks Poster Unveiling!

Sneak Peek

Artwork by the late Charley Harper gets a new life in this year’s collectible Books by the Banks event poster. The 2014 poster will be unveiled at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Cincinnati.

Books by the Banks is the region’s largest book festival. The world-famous Harper was a Cincinnati-based American Modernist artist who died in 2007. However his son, artist Brett Harper, and graphic designer Matthew Dayler, repurposed some iconic Harper images to create a special new design to promote the eighth year of the festival. This year’s festival is set for 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Duke Energy Center in downtown Cincinnati.

Brett Harper and Dayler will be at the poster unveiling to talk about the creation of the poster. A poster signing will follow. Joining them will be past poster artists, including Will Hillenbrand and Jeffrey Ebbeler. Posters will be for sale, with proceeds benefiting Books by the Banks. This year’s poster is $15 and previous years’ posters are $10.
Joseph-Beth Booksellers is located in Rookwood Pavilion, 2692 Madison Road. Visit www.BooksbytheBanks.org for details.

J. M. W. Turner Movie Trailer

It seems like movies about painters are all the rage. This one looks really good with Timothy Spall as Turner. It should be in the US in December. Perhaps they will have another discussion after the showing similar to the Tim's Vermeer one by C. F. Payne.

I saw a huge special exhibition of Turner at the MET in 2008. It is an amazing body of work when you see more than one or two. His life story is very interesting.

Day of Dead Benefit Show at Venue 222

Hey Cincinnati Illustrators
Calling on interested local artists to donate 8"x10" print/s from new or published work with a Day of the Dead theme for a benefit show I am curating in Cincinnati, Ohio on Friday October 31. If this appeals to you, please consider and read the form below!
___
This is a fundraiser for my brother, also a musician and visual artist, who lost everything he owns in a fire last week. No renter's insurance. I'm trying to help him get back on his feet after losing photos, art, audio and video recordings, power tools, welding equipment, many instruments, bikes, a quad, clothes, etc.
Please look the form over carefully and let me know if you are interested in submitting a piece. It can come from your archive, but must follow the theme closely. It can be a signed print that I can mat here.
Thank you very much for checking it out!
Sincerely,
Ursula Roma

Sneak Peak:

Making IT is a wrap!

As we move forward to the next phase of the film, (promotion and distribution) it is a great time to pause and say thank you! We owe a great deal of thanks to the cast, crew, artists and family members who have supported us and the film over the past two years. We are all very proud of what we have all made possible together.

As a special thank you to those in our hometown we will be screening a sneak peek of the film and have a short Q&A session following for the attendees at the 2014 Cincinnati Comicon Saturday 6th September.

Also make sure to stop by and say Howdy to our attending artists:

Sketch Outing in Spring Grove Cemetery

Amy Bogard and Vanessa Sorensen sketching among the tombstones
Vanessa Sorensen, Amy Bogard and I went sketching in Spring Grove Cemetery on Saturday. The air was crazy humid, but we had a great time.

We all sketched the Dexter Mausoleum. It is a chapel with wonderful flying buttresses. It reminded us of Hogwarts. One could imagine a Quidditch match taking place above it.

Good news, indeed!

Zombie Marge Comix & Stories #2 is finally available. It features the first half of Marge’s adventures with UFOs, abduction, Men in Black, glowing balls of light, alien invaders and, of course, the mysterious Mothman. Oh, and zombies figure into the story too. All this and some exciting back-up features, like an interview and Marge-flavored pin-ups by some of my cartoonist pals. The comic is available online through Indy Planet in two versions. The print edition is $5.00 and the digital download is 99 cents. The direct link is:

I will have copies of the comic at the upcoming local shows, Cincy ComiCon on September 5-7 and the Cincinnati Comic Expo on September 19-21. See you there!

Muddy Colors Article: So you want to be a “book cover artist”

This article by David Palumbo is packed with good advice. I have met many artists whose goals are exactly what is stated here.

There is a lot of interesting work out there beyond the confines of this narrow desire.

Sketches of Biblical Disproportions

It's hard for me to find work I can share on the blogosphere, but today I've posted a series of sketches on my blog from a ongoing project for a faith-based publisher.

There's some brief text about the challenges of treating Biblical subjects in cartoon form and why studying the Old Masters is not always helpful.
