Great Art Events on Main Street for Final Friday

I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead: A Solo Exhibition by Anthony “Tank” Mansfield
Where: Rock Paper Scissors, 1301 Main Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202
When: Final Friday March 28th, 7pm-10pm (Artist Talk 7-730pm)
Cost: Free

“I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” is a solo exhibition by visual artist/illustrator Anthony “Tank” Mansfield that will open at Rock Paper Scissors on Final Friday March 28th in OTR. In 2013, Mansfield was trying to juggle working full time, writing his Masters Thesis, planning/getting married, and running the Ghost Empire Collective, all while trying to create original art. To keep up with his art making, Mansfield started to carry pieces of paper with him at all times and would create ink pen drawings in restaurants and bars. “No matter how busy I am I need to have a creative outlet, especially when I am stressed out while working on multiple projects.” What started out as a form of cheap therapy soon blossomed into a series of 100 small drawings.

The 100 drawings will be shown together as one large image/collage. The show will open at 7pm so that patrons can see the image together as one piece and take pictures with it. At 8pm, the individual drawings will be available for purchase for $5 and will be removed from the wall in real time, thus constantly changing the overall image and how it appears on the wall. The goal is to go from 100 drawings to an empty wall in a span of 2 hours. The show will also include original drawings, paintings, and illustrations that Mansfield has created for Valley of the Sun, The Cincinnati Beard Barons, and MadTree Brewing (he did the illustration for their new Sprye cans) over the past 2 years. Prints will also be for sale.

This will likely be Mansfield's last solo show for the foreseeable future in Cincinnati as the artist has started to show his work nationally over the course of the past 2 years. So far in 2014 he has had a solo show in Columbus, Oh, taken part in a group exhibition at Cricket Press in Lexington, Ky, and will be part of 2 group shows in Los Angeles this May.

The after party will be held across the street at the Drinkery where Mansfield’s art collective, Ghost Empire, will be making live art.

Cincinnati, Ohio- The Ghost Empire Collective, a group of artists from the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area, will play host of the Cincinnati Comic Expo for the second year in a row. The event will return to the Mainstay Rock Bar’s “Betty Bar” located on the second floor of the establishment. With it’s fully stocked bar, retro décor, and hand painted pin up murals, it’s the perfect setting for artists and comic fans to unwind after a big day of walking the halls of the Convention Center.

To celebrate CCE and the fantastic artists that come in from around the nation for the event, Ghost Empire will stage their second “Art of War” tournament. The Art of War is an artistic competition that pits contestants against each other in a series of quick draw competitions. At the beginning of the night artists can sign up for free to take part in the competition and anyone is welcome to submit a topic to draw into a bucket. Once the tournament starts the event MC will pull a random idea out of the bucket that the contestants have never seen and will have between 5 to 10 minutes to draw it. Last year’s suggested ideas included “Cougars in Over the Rhine” and “Zombie Bear Cannon”. At the end of the time period the crowd will pick by applause, who advances and who goes home. There can only be 1 winner at the end of the night that can take home cash, prizes, and the title of being the grand champion of “The Art of War”.

“The first Art of War was by far our most entertaining event last year and the CCE after party last year had the most talent in terms of artists performing live art, so we are taking the 2 things we do best and turning them into one colossal night” states GEC found Anthony “Tank” Mansfield. “It’s a true pressure cooker for any artist, as you literally have no idea what you are about to draw when you step foot on stage in front of a room full of people; its like improv comedy meets karaoke meets a sports competition.” Admission is free and prints and the original pieces of art from the Art of War tournament will be for sale.

Opening Day Show at Neon's

Too much Mad Magazine as a kid causes strange thoughts...

I did a couple paintings for a Opening Day show at Neon's put together by Ghost Empire Collective. It looks like there will be a lot of cool work. Fortunately, the art could focus on mascots so no one would notice my lack of ability drawing actual sporting events.

The show will feature live art and artwork by illustrator/poster designer Jaimie Filer, photographer/visual artist Snotty RLE, videographer/visual artist Justin K. Hite, painter Doug Meyer, designer Justin Barraclough, artist Brian Lalley, artist Sarah Timmerman, visual artist/Ghost Empire founder Anthony “Tank” Mansfield, Mike Maydak and many more.

Hope to see you there!

Mr. Redlegs has always seemed like a bit of a player. I love this car design based on a real car with a real fin like that.
