It is 5 days and only $775. It looks like an amazing lineup of instructors:

Children's Book Boot Camp

This summer, CBBC will be held in Pennsylvania at the Highlights Foundation...a very cool retreat with log cabins, great cuisine and all of the amenities needed to tuck yourself away for four days and WORK.  It will be the first SUPER CBBC...which means you get to work with four author/illustrators....me, Bruce Degen, Denise Fleming and Paul O. Zelinsky....before meeting with Rotem Moscovich (Editor at Hyperion), Laurent Linn (Art Director at Simon & Schuster) and Rachel Ward (Literary agent with Prospect) to pitch your book project.

You're getting this extremely EARLY notice because Highlights is offering a 15% discount if you register by January 15th.

I have heard raves about the Highlights facility. If you are working on a children's book dummy, it is a great place to get feedback from an amazing team. A friend of mine just published her first novel and has gotten a lot out of their writing workshops.

Cost is $90 for the week.

It is almost at capacity, and I only have room for about 5 more campers.

Each day of camp, I will introduce popular design software (i.e. Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Autocad, etc.) and it should be a blast!

Advanced Illustrators Workshop

Will Hillenbrand gave me a heads up about this and I thought some might be interested:

Advanced Illustrators Workshop
While your artwork is accomplished alone, it is only with guidance that an illustrator can begin to understand how to make it in today’s picture-book world. Let one of today’s top children’s book illustrators be your guide. Explore the children’s book market with them, learn new techniques, and enjoy the camaraderie of artists who understand your passion.

During this intensive, five-day workshop you’ll immerse yourself in illustration—oil wash on board, printmaking, pen and ink, watercolors, and more. Daily hands-on workshops will challenge you to sharpen your illustration skills, all under the support and guidance of our highly talented mentors.

In addition to illustration techniques, you’ll also explore

                • dummy preparation;
                • storyboarding;
                • continuity;
                • portfolio expectations;
                • character development;
                • self-promotion; and
                • finding a market.

The Brilliant Dummy
Creating A Picture Book Dummy For Submission Illustrators write with pictures as much as authors do with words. To create an impeccably drawn and brilliantly written picture book, the author-illustrator—the one who wears both hats—must find the right balance of art and words.
Judy Byron Schachner, #1 New York Times best-selling author and illustrator and first-ever winner of the E.B. White Read Aloud award, and Lindsay Barrett George, author/illustrator and winner of the prestigious One Book for Every Child award, will share with you the ins and outs of writing and illustrating your own picture book. They will break down 32 pages of picture-book content into what really belongs on the half-title page and full-title page; what is “front matter”; and what pages are best for tension, release, and the all-important happy ending. They will even take you into the belly of the dreaded gutter. Additionally, you will work with Judy and Lindsay to finalize a picture-book dummy. You will have individual attention that helps you refine your story and decide what images you plan to illustrate. Careful attention will be paid to text placement and page breaks, and whether to design double spreads, spot illustrations, or full bleeds. Your leaders will also share how to send your completed dummy to an editor or agent.

From Prose to Picture Book
Whether a picture book be rhyming or traditional prose, one of the key components to success is weaving in lyrical, expressive language. Join workshop leaders Candace Flemming (Muncha-Muncha-Muncha!) and Rebecca Kai Dotlich (Over in the Pink House) as they guide you through the process of creating a sellable picture book. Your facilitators will share mentor picture books with you; critique works in progress; discuss style, plot, and structure; and lead you to a better understanding of today’s picture-book market. Through one-on-ones, group critiques, hands-on workshops, and private writing time, you can expect to leave with a completed dummy, ready for submission, and a clear understanding of what makes a picture book sell. Special Guests Caldecott-winning illustrator Eric Rohmann and MFA professor and illustrator  Melanie Hall will discuss the illustrator-author relationship in creating a picture book.

Highlights Foundation Illustration Workshop

I have heard a lot of really good things about the writing workshops the Highlights Foundation has. Hopefully this illustration focused one will be as good.  I am not sure of pricing. I know scholarships are available for their writing workshops but if you are interested, contact them to find out. There is a limit of 30 attendees.
Here is the info:
The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award, the Coretta Scott King Award, the Caldecott Medal . . . if you're an illustrator, you know what these awards mean. They recognize illustrators at the top of their field, the height of their game. Illustrators who have mastered their own special brands of magic.

What if you could spend a weekend with those award winners? Learn new techniques from them? Explore a variety of media? Find out what they know about getting published and building a career? What if you could get to know them as mentors-and as friends?

You can. At the Highlights Foundation's Advanced Illustrators Workshop, September 1-5, 2011. Our award-winning faculty includes Floyd Cooper, Eric Rohmann, Melanie Hall, Suzanne Bloom, and Lindsay Barrett George. These picture-book pros will guide you through today's best techniques for children's illustration at the Highlights Foundation's new facility: The Barn at Boyds Mills. The latest addition to the homeplace of the Founders of Highlights for Children offers room to spread out and create art. During this intensive, hands-on learning adventure you'll sharpen your skills and explore exciting new techniques, all under the guidance of professional illustrators who have wowed readers with their work.

Besides illustration techniques, here are just a few of the topics you'll explore:

storyboarding

continuity
portfolio expectations
character development
self-promotion
digital portfolios
dummy preparation
finding a market
matching media to text
Plus, you'll receive one-on-one critiques from faculty members.

With five top illustrators as faculty, you may be surprised that this workshop is limited to 30 illustrators. The limited number of attendees makes this advanced workshop a lot like a graduate seminar. You and your work will receive personal attention and instruction in an intimate setting.

To secure your spot, or for more information, contact Jo Lloyd at 570-253-1192, e-mail
jo.lloyd@highlightsfoundation.org, or request an application online.

Founders workshops take place near Honesdale, Pennsylvania, on a lovely farm at the edge of the Poconos, complete with front porch rockers, wireless technology, and the calm of the woods. This year, our new Barn at Boyds Mills, built from local wood and fieldstone, provides a serene space for illustrators to work.

Please feel free to share this e-mail with others who might have an interest or to include the information in blog posts or through other social networking forums.
