Here is the final sketch before reference, transfer to Bristol, and inking it. My model is available tomorrow. So, this will be finished here, shortly. I positioned the darker areas next to areas of mostly white or white areas where they could contrast nicely. I also placed these in the background so they would recede and push the woman forward. There are alternating places of busy and simple, open shapes. I'm confident this will be one of my better pieces.

ReplyDeleteI was hesitant to make a comment, but since this is just the sketch...
I think you should make a serious effort to get the figure as willowy and feminine as possible. The strength of the arms and torso and the type of clothing leaves the gender a bit ambiguous. Perhaps the tunic made of leaves is not quite the right attire. Maybe explore a simple bark pattern with lines that resemble classical drapery. Or spanish moss that resembles lace?

I should have mentioned something about the pose that really works for me —the way the torso makes an arch that continues through the arms, branches and canopy and then glides off the page at the top and right. This helps reinforce the idea that this character is a provident and caring being with a wide reach.

ReplyDeleteChristina, to answer your questions: I did not go to Lunch this week. I got ahold of Brennan too late. Next week, though :) And no, I don't use Sepia at all. This is just the way my graphite drawings scan into the computer. Sometimes I go into PS and greyscale them.
