Seeing Calvino Exhibit at the Public Library

This looks like a great exhibit. Maybe we could stop by after next weeks downtown lunch!

What: Seeing Calvino Exhibit
Who: Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County
When: Sept. 1 – Nov. 20, 2015
Where: Main Library, 800 Vine St. (downtown)
Why: To showcase Italo Calvino-inspired artwork through the perspectives of three Ohio artists.

Seeing Calvino is an attempt by Ohio artists Leighton Connor, Matt Kish, and Joe Kuth to “see” the work of the Italian writer Italo Calvino (1923-1985) through the creation of illustrations responding to and exploring his ideas. The three artists’ work will be on display in the Popular Library of the Main Library *Sept.1 – Nov. 20, 2015*.

Started as a Tumblr in April of 2014, the three artists began interpreting each of Calvino’s Invisible Cities in the order they appear in the book, with a new city posted each week. The three illustrators had their own individual methods of bringing Calvino’s words to life, and took a variety of approaches to their cities, often exploring territory and tools new to them in an attempt to capture the spirit of the text.

The result is a wide range of styles, from solidly representational to near-abstract. The artists also employed a variety of media including acrylic, watercolor, gouache paints, pen and ink, colored pencils, markers and collage. The 55 illustrations comprising the entirety of the cities named in Calvino's book were completed by the trio in April.

The exhibit is located in the Popular Library, open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday. The Main Library is located at 800 Vine St.

Jeff Smith Discussing Will Eisner October 30th

This looks like a great talk! If you cannot make it, the Will Eisner exhibit is up until November 30th.

From the event page:

WILL EISNER: 75 YEARS OF GRAPHIC STORYTELLING

The exhibit, curated by Caitlin McGurk and Jared Gardner, will be open for a public reception from 6 - 7:30pm

Following the reception, join us at 7:30pm in the Jean and Charles Schulz Lecture Hall for WILL EISNER'S LIFE AND LEGACY - Jeff Smith, creator of the best-selling graphic novel Bone and friend of Will Eisner’s, will discuss Eisner’s career and its impact.

"Eisner is a mentor, a teacher, and a hero to generations of cartoonists. His innovations as a visual storyteller helped define the grammar of modern comics and open up new possibilities for the form that are still being explored today. Among Eisner’s many
students, Jeff Smith stands out not only for carrying on the traditions Eisner championed in graphic storytelling, but also for continuing Eisner’s lifelong mission to elevate comics as an artistic and literary form. And as a pioneering self-publisher, Smith has continued Eisner’s work in teaching young cartoonists the importance of understanding not only the technical aspects of their craft but the economics as well.”
-Exhibition Co-Curator and OSU Professor Jared Gardner, on the impact of Will Eisner.

THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

View Chagall, Matisse & Gauguin in Main Library exhibit

Explore the bright colors and vivid images put on paper by European masters, such as Marc Chagall, Paul Gauguin and Henri Matisse, during the Creative Expression: Artists Works exhibit from the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. It runs May 5-Aug. 24 at the Main Library, 800 Vine St.

The exhibit features selections from artist books in the Loeb Collection. Eda Kuhn Loeb was born in Cincinnati in 1867, one of 10 children of Samuel and Rebecca (Wise) Kuhn. Shortly after she married Morris Loeb in 1895, they moved to New York City. She died in New York in 1951.
In her will, she gave a bequest of $50,000 to the Library. At that time, it was the largest monetary bequest the Library had ever received. It was decided that some of the money would be spent to purchase fine art books – rare, signed, limited edition books illustrated by late 19th- and early 20th-century artists.

In 1958, the head of the Library’s Art & Music Department, Alice S. Plaut, traveled to London, Rome, Geneva and Paris to select materials for the collection, which will be on display in the Joseph S. Stern, Jr. Cincinnati Room. Its hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday; and 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Call 513-369-6959. Visit www.CincinnatiLibrary.org.

Fairytale illustrations in Peter G. Thomson exhibit at Main Library

“Little Red Riding Hood” from the Peter G. Thomson Collection. Photos courtesy of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.

“The Night Before Christmas” from the Peter G. Thomson Collection.
This looks cool!

From the PR sheet:

"There’s something about the holidays that brings out the little kid in all us, and what better what to revisit our childhoods than by viewing the classic illustrations of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, The Night Before Christmas and other favorite books at the Main Library.
The illustrations are from the Peter G. Thomson Collection and make up the exhibit “Wonderland of Fairytales” in the Joseph S. Stern, Jr. Cincinnati Room in the Main Library. The exhibit is on display Nov. 16 through Feb. 17, 2013, and includes alphabet books, Mother Goose nursery rhymes, Shakespeare and a host of other children’s books from the 1880s.
Peter G. Thomson, 1851-1931, in the span of about a decade (1880s) published over 100 children’s books in his Race Street shop. The main production of color printing was children’s books and comical valentines. His publications grew in popularity, rivaling McLaughlin Brothers of New York who bought him out in 1892. With proceeds from the sale, he established the Champion Coated Paper Company."

EXHIBIT HOURS: The Joseph S. Stern, Jr. Cincinnati Room is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Main Library is located at 800 Vine Street.
The Cincinnati Room also houses the Charles Fontayne and William S. Porter’ “Cincinnati Panorama of 1848,” the oldest wide view photograph of an American city. The award-winning masterpiece is revered worldwide as one of the finest examples of daguerreian photography.
For more information about the exhibit, contact the Genealogy & Local History Department at 513-369-6905.

Golden Book Illustrations at the Main Cincinnati Library Downtown

The Cincinnati Main Library is hosting the “Golden Legacy” exhibit, the most extensive public showing ever of original illustration art from American publishing’s best-loved and most consequential picture-book series, Little Golden Books.

The exhibit runs through Feb. 21, 2013, in the Main Library’s Atrium, 800 Vine Street. Hours are: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

From the PR sheet:
"Launched in 1942 — the first full year of America’s involvement in World War II — Little Golden Books made high-quality illustrated books available at affordable prices for the first time to millions of young children and their parents. Among the artists who contributed to the ambitious series were greats of the European émigré community (including Garth Williams, Feodor Rojankovsky, and Tibor Gergely) who had gathered in New York as the European situation worsened; alumni of the Walt Disney Studios (including Gustaf Tenggren, Martin Provensen, J.P. Miller, and Mary Blair), who came East for the artistic freedom and control associated with picture-book making; and American originals such as Eloise Wilkin, Elizabeth Orton Jones, Richard Scarry, and Hilary Knight.

Sixty original masterpieces of illustrated art by these and other artists, chosen from the vast Random House archive, will be featured in the exhibition, including examples from such picture-book classics as “The Poky Little Puppy,” “Tootle,” “Home for a Bunny,” “The Kitten Who Thought He Was a Mouse,” “The Color Kittens,” “I Can Fly,” and more.

This exhibit was organized by the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature in Abilene, Texas. For more information, call 513-369-6900 or visit www.CincinnatiLibrary.org."

The downtown library always has such good shows. Our next downtown lunch is 1/16. We should stop by the exhibit after! Although, this will be hard to resist until then.

Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit Exhibit at the Cincinnati Art Museum

From the CAM site:

Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit

May 26, 2012 - September 09, 2012

More than one hundred works, from paintings to sculpture, are featured in this major exhibition devoted to the acclaimed artist Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859–1937). The exhibition follows Tanner’s personal journey to explore his work from many facets: the impact of his upbringing and education as a young African American in Philadelphia in the years after the Civil War; his success as an American expatriate artist at the highest levels of the international art world at the turn of the 20th century; Tanner’s role as a leader of an artist’s colony in rural France; and his contributions in aid of American servicemen to the efforts of the Red Cross during WWI. Landscapes, portraits and luminous street scenes from Tanner’s visits to the Holy Land and Near East are included in this exhibition, which highlights his invigoration of religious painting, an endeavour deeply rooted in his own faith. Organized by the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, this exhibition is the second stop on a three-city tour and is accompanied by both a major catalogue and a children’s book by renowned artist Faith Ringgold.
