FREE SEMINAR ON CONTRACT LAW FOR ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS from Manifest

Thanks to Beth Neal on the heads up about this.

From the page:

Contracts can be a frustrating part of the art 'business'.

What is a fair contract agreement between yourself and a gallery? How do you handle contracts for freelance design work?

Three attorneys from the Cincinnati Bar Association will be joining us at the Manifest Drawing Center to discuss and answer questions about contract law for artists, makers, and designers.

Please spread the word!

This is offered free of charge at Manifest Drawing Center, 4905 Whetsel Ave., 2nd Floor, in Madisonville. (NOT at Manifest Gallery.)

Drawn Exhibition at Manifest opens April 17th at 6PM

Manifest's DRAWN show is an amazing show every year. This year Margi Hopkins has made the cut as well as 26 other artists curated from 1188 submitted works!

More details here from the site:

DRAWN
2nd Annual International Exhibition
of Contemporary Drawing

Manifest was founded in-part to stand for the importance of drawing as a process, skill, and discipline, and as a continuing viable product of the creative fine art and design fields. Since its inception the organization has continued to incorporate drawing-based programming, including education (Drawing Center), publications (INDA), and gallery exhibits into the broader spectrum of its projects. The students and professors who formed Manifest in 2004 knew that despite their diverging career paths (architecture, art history, painting, industrial design, photography) they were brought together on account of their connection to drawing and their mutually intense but multi-faceted pursuit of this fundamental discipline.
A year ago, in honor of the original spirit of the founding ideals of Manifest, the gallery launched DRAWN as a new annual exhibition. DRAWN seeks to survey and present the broad scope of drawing being made today. This gallery exhibit is completely separate from but nevertheless complements, and sometimes overlaps, the annual INDA publication project.
DRAWN called for artists to submit works of drawing in any media relevant to the practice (including non-traditional approaches), any style, and any genre (fine art, illustration, design, conceptual, realism, etc.).
For this exhibit 394 artists from 44 states, 20 countries, and Washington D.C. submitted 1188 works for consideration. Thirty-six works by the following 27 artists from 13 states, England, Japan, and Spain were selected for presentation in the gallery and Manifest Exhibition Annual publication.

Margi says: Come visit me and my "Departing" piece Fri April 17th 6-9pm. This exhibit will be fabulous!

WEEKEND DRAWING MARATHON
TWO DAYS OF IMMERSIVE LIFE DRAWING

SINGLE MODEL SESSION
Open Figure is an uninstructed life-drawing studio format whereby professionals, students, and the creative public can work side-by-side in common pursuit of excellence in the discipline of drawing (or various other media) while working from the nude model. This no-performance-pressure environment inevitably leads to new learning, support, and productivity that complements formal study (at the high school, college, or professional level), or other non-figure-related artistic work. Each session is moderated by Manifest Associates who are trained and well-qualified artists and/or instructors at the college level.

Twelve hours of life drawing in two days!

This special offering is generally intended for longer more extended poses. At the

moderator's discretion with participant input multiple poses may be set up during
this two-day drawing marathon.
Participants are welcome to work in various media besides drawing, while taking
into consideration other participants and the integrity of the studio space.

SCHEDULE: TBD

Gesture Drawing Session at Manifest!

Hi guys!

The folks at the Manifest Drawing Studio are so cool- I emailed them to see if they would be down for hosting a gesture life drawing session that is good for animators- short poses no longer than 10 or 15 minutes as well as short ones, mere minutes (or less!). And they are totally doing it!

Since we animators have such a volume of drawings to get through its really beneficial to be able to draw quickly and capture motion quickly- and this is how you develop that skill.

SO! Come to the session! Show them that animators need access to short poses!

Saturday June 7
11:00 am - 2:00 pm

Cost: $20 ($10 for college and high school students)
(participants still must register in advance or upon arriving at the Drawing Center)

Manifest Studio Wall

It's been awhile since I last gave a plug to Manifest.
One of the things I like about the drawing studio is the way artists are encouraged to pin up their art. While I'm drawing, there are always numerous examples of great work looming over me that inspire and otherwise bolster my efforts by setting the bar very very high.

These photos were taken at the old studio in the Essex building. The artwork on the walls was accessible to the public whenever the Essex hosted one of their Friday night Artwalks.

About nine months ago, Manifest moved the drawing studio to its current location in Madisonville. The art is still pinned up and frankly, it just gets better and better. The only problem is, without a regular open house event, there is no way to view the pieces unless you sign up for drawing sessions or take a workshop. To remedy this, Manifest has created a virtual studio wall on its website. You can view samples of the artwork done in the studio over the years.

This feature is in the early stages and hasn't been getting a whole lot of action. I thought I'd help by spreading the word. I have a couple of watercolors there, and plan to post more as time allows.

In the meantime, I'm still posting recent work (like the one at the top) on my blog.

update: 1/27/12
I've found a photo of Manifest's current studio in Madisonville. I think it's a beautiful environment to work in.

Life Drawing

Life drawing is essential to keeping up one's chops as an illustrator and I just found out about a new group meeting on Thursdays from fellow illustrators lunch regular Bruce Erikson.

Open Life Drawing at Xavier

Every Thursday (except for holidays, spring break and the summer) we have a model from 6-9PM. There is no model on March 4th which happens to fall during spring break or April 1st which is our Easter Break. We finish up on April 22nd.

We do one long three hour pose so that people can paint or sculpt as well as the customary sketch. Each session is $7 or $30 for all 12-13 for the whole semester.  Its pretty low-key, but lots of fun.

If anyone is interested in checking it out, drop me an email and I will send the maps that Bruce provided that show where the studio is on campus and where to park.

Other Life Drawing Opportunities

Manifest Gallery also offers open life drawing sessions. Chuck, Oliver and Paula have attended them and can perhaps give more details about the group and pose lengths.

Dr. Sketchy's is a life drawing group with themed poses and costumes, which is a fun change of pace. They are the 2nd Thursday each month at Leapin Lizard Gallery. The next one is March 11th from 8-11ish. You can get regular updates from the meetup site. Many of us have attended these as well and they are a lot of fun.

I know there are some other groups as well through the Art Academy and Cincinnati Art Club. If anyone wants to recommend a group, post it!

Life Drawing

I've never attended a Dr. Sketchy's session, but I thought I'd answer the call to post some figures. I did this male figure in pastel several weeks ago at Manifest Studios.

There's more to see at my figure drawing blog. Visitors are always welcome.
