Map of Orthe

Here's a map of Orthe, a world I am developing for a role-playing game. This is almost finished. I'm doctouring the edges to make it look like an aged map on parchment. I used Micron pens, 3 point and 8 point, to ink over the pencils.

  1. Wow Justin. Lotsa work and nicely rendered. Did you use a Bristol or a paper that had some tooth.

Any time I use Microns on smooth bristol board it's a smudge-fest!

  2. Thanks, and no, I just used a heavyweight, low-tooth drawing paper. It can still smear, but only after about 10-20 seconds after application and it holds the dark well.

  3. I love micron pens. I also have gotten addicted to using sharpies.

Lovely work! I am a huge fan of cartography. Good job on the type too. I would have done it digitally because I am lazy.

  4. It looks great, Justin. I love the balancing of black areas and the paths you've created for our eyes.

  5. The Mountains of Madness sound like a terrible vacation choice!

  6. Thanks, Christina :) I took typography in college. It was one of my favourite courses. I love doing really tedious stuff like laying out perspective and type. Not sure why.

Thanks, Brian. fortunately, the way geography frequently works the earth follows certain patterns that make it easy to compose into aesthetically pleasing shapes. The mountains are all either volcanic or are part of tcchtonic shifting that puts them parallel with one another. I stole and read a couple of my brother's geography textbooks from when he was in college. It has helped tremendously in designing maps. There will always be whimsy, but it helps to have a grounding in the ways this world works. Since I have collected a few cyclopedias and reference guides relating to geology and geography. Very helpful.

  7. And, yes, the Mountains of Madness are not a very touristy region. I went there a few years ago and I swear I've never been the same since. Might explain why there are three or four extra voices arguing in my head when I make decisions :P
