Science, Medicine and Nature

The ongoing Zombie discourse has inspired me to post another chapter opener from "The Amazing Quiz Challenge".
In the end, the chapter's title was reduced to just "science", but when I started, I tried to think of funny ways to incorporate science, nature, and medicine in one reasonably simple drawing. I let myself be influenced by the understated approach of Gary Larson and the famous Muppet duo Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker.

O.K. I admit it. It's a direct steal.

  1. This is great! When I was a kid I had a template that had different beeker and science equipment shapes. I drew all kinds of set-ups on my folders...

    Is this all digital?

  2. Thanks, guys!

Christina, I agree! Beakers and flasks are a helluva lot of fun to draw, especially glass ones filled with overlapping liquid. Probably half my commissions involve professors and labs, and I'm not complaining.

All the RD artwork is my standard technique —hand-drawn pencil outlines backed with computer-drawn shapes. I then add a few details drawn with black chalk, like the black stain on the fall-guy's face. That little smear was inspired by various black stains I've seen on hapless faces in Tex Avery cartoons. Something about the chalky texture always made them funnier.

  3. Hehe--- I used to have a computer game called "the Neverhood" where everything was made out of polymer clay! (Go figure, huh?)

There was a puzzle that involved beakers of chemicals that was so cool! Check it out:

  5. Oh no! Not the Gene Deitch Tom and Jerry's!
I definitely see your point about the lab equipment, Woody, but I'm happy to let pretty much everything influence me —except those cartoons!

    Dicky-Moe!
