Medyrserenel "The Mute"

Here's a drawing of a character I'm playing in a Pathfinder game. His common name is Medyr, but is actually, Medyrserenel (Aiming Star). Brush and ink on paper. I'm working on a few other drawings. The additional drawing is Medyr and his betrothed in his homeland at his father's monument. I'll be inking this soon, after I add some more features and tweak the building to make it more decorative. Plus, the pot needs to be sitting on some kind of pedestal or pillar, not the railing :P I've done some more work on "The White Hart", as well.

  1. On the hart, I want to see a thinner yellow line on the left side of the antlers. The solid line around them gives a bit of a "cut out" look. It stands out when the ear and side of the face are so nicely lit. Other than that, it is coming along well.

I like the inks and design of the third very much. I assume the middle one will be inked similarly?

  2. Wow, I'm impressed, Justin!

You have a knack for handling the background elements and lighting to keep the focus on the character, where it should be. You do this equally well in pastel and pen and ink —kudos!

If I could make one small suggestion: the crown that the deer is wearing seems a bit foreign. I know you wanted to give it a bit of emphasis, but this comes at the expense of the great backlighting situation you've set up. It also detracts from the deer's face. I would work some cooler colors in the crown to make it a bit more convincing, and if emphasis is needed, perhaps add a glowing stone to it or just give it a bit of reflective shimmer on one side (preferably the right where the sun is coming from.)

    Excellent work —thanks for sharing!

  3. Oops, Christina and I posted at the same time. I agree with her antler comment. Taking that line down, will make the whole image more realistic, as well as allow the viewer's eye to wander to the deer's face.

  4. Thanks, guys, that is very helpful. I appreciate the criticisms. I can't tell you how much I value this group. The thing I miss most about college is the fellowship and the tight little group we had to critique and be creative with. I know it is an investment to write so much and really think about someone's art. Thank you.

  5. Justin I second (or third?) Christina and Chuck's comments re the antlers - the rest is wonderful and the pinlight/reflective light and cool color at the bottom is killer -

  8. Thank you all, really. I have no words to describe how helpful you have all been. I very much respect and admire each of you and trust your critiques.

Thanks to John Maggard, in particular. I hope to have as much of a lucrative and respected career someday.
