Hairy Potter

Never thought I'd post this, but with Potter-mania in full swing, I just buckled.

This was created for the spring issue of California Magazine. They have a running feature called Twisted Titles where they invite readers to riff on a famous book. Then an illustrator gets to pile on the irreverence some more. I was offered the chance to illustrate Hairy Potter—Hippie Ceramicist, and couldn't resist dragging the movie Ghost into the mud.

Here is another concept with Lord Voldemort as a tiki mug.
(I could have lived with that one too.)

More sketches on the blog.

Jerry Dowling: Boehner Caricatures

From Jerry: These are the beginning and final of my caricature of House Speaker John Boehner.

The final version is framed and hanging on the wall at the Grand Ole Pub in West Chester.

It's all photoshop from start to finish. There isn't much left of the original.

Cool Article on Caricature in the NYT Blog

Cool article in the New York Times blog section about creating caricatures. The writer had three artists discuss their approach to doing a caricature of Picasso.

My favorite is Pablo as a flounder (get the cubist joke?)

http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/11/drawing-funny/

Since so many on this blog do caricatures, I would be interested in their take on this study.

By the way, in my opinion, Pablo Picasso is one of the most overrated artists ever. Just an aside since the article has little to do with him as an artist but as a subject... I suppose he was an artist that really cultivated himself as a "brand" as they say these days. Perhaps not the first but one of the most effective.

Jerry Dowling: News Portraits for Restaurant: The Whole Gang

From Jerry: There are 16 of these done for a new restaurant in West Chester called Grand Ole Pub, an American style mid-class place with a historic and political theme, going from the beginning of the country to now. All the presidents are up and framed in one room, and all these Fox news personalities have another wall. There is a small Statue of Liberty in front of a lit mirror.

I'll be doing more of these later. Newt Gingrich is one, possibly Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney.

Jerry Dowling: News Portraits for Restaurant

From Jerry: Here are three of these dudes. There will be 16 total for now and more later. I assume it is the budget, as usual.

Here's the poop on the restaurant. I don't know if it has a name yet. It's either in Fairfield or West Chester, opening June or July.

The Pub will have a Founding Fathers theme. The decor will tell a story starting with the Boston Tea Party, Declaration of Independence, Revolutionary war, Constitution, through Washington's Presidency and pictures of all 44 Presidents. We have a 320 sq. foot room that will have an Americans Heroes Wall honoring all branches of the military, police, and firefighters and the heroes from 9/12.. In this room will be a Fox wall with a TV tuned to Fox News and the caricatures on that wall.
