I suppose this drawing is mostly about the colors and the line treatment. It's probably the most stock-art looking thing I think I've ever done. I added the birds because they make me laugh when I think about drawing as a child... Everyone's birds were V's. Or
upside down V's for variety.
The cloud linework has an interesting caligraphic feel.
ReplyDeleteVery nice :) I like the hue choices here. There really is something to be about simplicity. It truly is the backbone to a great composition. This has excellent movement and tension. The waves push and pull and those lines overlap nicely. The only thing I would say is that the sky is a bit compartmentalized. The birds are in groups, the clouds are grouped. Maybe consider overlapping those birds with the clouds and maybe stretch them out a bit to create some of that nice flow you have going in the water. I think that overlapping would create new spatial relationships that would make the arrangement of fore, middle, and background more clear. It really is a beautiful piece, I love it. It looks like stained glass :)
ReplyDeleteWow, thanks so much for your comments! I really appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteI really like it. Yes, it could be stock work, but it doesn't at all have to be. I'd love to see what a ship or animal looked like, coming through this scene in the next moment.
ReplyDeleteBrian - My mom thought the same thing about the scene. She wanted to see a whale peeking out from the waves. :)
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the blog, Steph!
ReplyDeleteI took a quick look at your blog and saw a piece called Flowers to Trees that impressed me more than anything else I've seen posted here. I'm curious about why it was passed over.
This piece is nice, but I agree with those who are asking to see a bit more. Often it's a good thing to leave your viewer wanting more, or to leave some details to the imagination, but you don't want to take it to the point where you're holding out on your audience. Maybe that's what's giving you that stock-ish feeling.
It's pretty, I like it.
